DALLAS, Texas (KXAS) – Nine people have died in highway accidents in north Texas after a cold front brought sleet overnight and created treacherous driving conditions early Thursday morning.

Fort Worth Police report that six people died after 133 vehicles accumulated on I-35W in that city. Police 36 victims were transported to hospitals. A total of 65 patients sought medical care in hospitals.
“The vehicles are just mutilated,” said Matt Zavadsky, spokesman for MedStar, which offers the ambulance service for the region, earlier Thursday. “Several tow trucks are on site. It will take a long time to unravel this wreck. “
Thirty-six people were taken to hospitals after the crash, some with serious injuries, Zavadsky said. At least 65 people sought treatment in hospitals after the crash, officials said at a press conference on Thursday afternoon.
He said his crews had a sand and salt mixture in the ambulances that they used on site. At one point, he said, one of the ambulances was hit, but there was only minor damage to it and the crew members were fine.
“The road was so treacherous from the ice that some of the first responders fell on the scene,” said Zavadsky. Officials confirmed that ice was a factor in the buildup.
The police set up a reunification center for family members in a community center.
Fort Worth Police Officer Daniel Segura called the accident “massive” and said the authorities were still there on Thursday afternoon.
Fort Worth Police tweeted about the lanes of the I-35 Toll Express heading north, and the regular lanes have been closed due to a major weather-related accident. The police set up a reunification center for family members in a community center.
Fort Worth firefighters tweeted that they were responding to the buildup and that several people were trapped. It is unclear how many people were trapped.
At least three people have been confirmed to have died in Dallas, according to NBCDFW.com.
Further south in Austin, more than two dozen vehicles were caught in a pile on an icy road and one person was injured, emergency officials said.
The icy weather is part of a larger storm system. Ice storm warnings apply from Arkansas to Kentucky. Meanwhile, another winter storm is expected to bring snow to the mid-Atlantic states. More than 125,000 households and businesses are without power, primarily in Kentucky and West Virginia.
