Fort Falkenstein is a Texas Airbnb appropriate for royalty

Just outside Burnet, Texas, the 90-foot tall Falkenstein Castle rises, confusing and astonishing passers-by with its towers, stone gates, and expansive balconies. It’s often mistaken for a tourist attraction, but it’s really so much more. Falkenstein Castle is an event location, a family home, an outstanding AirBnB and the fulfillment of the dream of a long dead king.

The builders and owners Terry and Kim Young were fascinated by Bavarian castles after a trip to Neuschwanstein Castle in southwest Germany. There they learned that its builder, King Ludwig II – also known as the Mad King of Bavaria – had a passion for architecture. He used his family fortune to build Neuschwanstein in the 19th century, and before his death he secretly made plans to build another and made plans to build another, which he named “Falkenstein”.

Inspired by his renderings, he would probably never have imagined Castle Falkenstein, standing on 113 acres of prime Texas Hill Country with stone lions guarding the double doors. The Bavarian castle is the boys’ main residence. But guests often book the halls and grounds for events. Within the 14,000 square meter castle, families have get-togethers and brides hold fairytale weddings. The entire property can accommodate a cool dozen and each of the bedrooms has a unique feel, from the master bedroom with an indoor heated hot tub to an all purple room with arched doors.

Everywhere in Falkenstein Castle, modern and old treasures brush your shoulders. In the kitchen, antique tools hang over a royal marble island. Great and decent, the decor is reminiscent of its Bavarian origins but with free Wi-Fi and modern bathroom facilities. In addition, the owners have fully equipped their playroom with a pool table and darts, as well as thousands of films. You also invested in an Oculus Quest VR system.

Guests spend time reading in the pavilion or feeding koi by the huge koi pond with a glittering waterfall. You will find rest under the watchful eyes of the angels who keep watch in the on-site chapel. After all, Falkenstein Castle has a curated collection of over 100 works of art and artifacts. Some date back thousands of years and the family urges guests not to touch them but to admire them.
