In February 2015, members of the Fredericksburg Chapter of the Texas Exes were looking for a way to give back to the local community. They also found cash among the piles of trash scattered along a two-mile stretch of Highway 290.
On their first trip to pick up trash as part of TxDOT’s Adopt-a-Highway program, the group found two $ 100 bills scattered along the street that they donated to the Texas Exes Scholarship Fund. “You never know what you’ll find mixed up with the trash,” says advocacy chairman Thomas Brayshaw, BA ’68, MA ’70, Life Member.
The Fredericksburg chapter hits the freeway five times a year, with eight to ten chapter members picking up trash and debris along Highway 290. “It’s a great community service and a great way to build community within the chapter,” says Brashaw.
In addition to the occasional cash discovery, another bonus the group receives is free advertising. The state provides a sign promoting Fredericksburg alumni on the same street they are helping clean up. Thanks to the Chapter’s efforts, the pride of Texas Exes is revealed to all on Highway 290.
