Austin, Texas – The Texas Department of Public Safety announced a new requirement for a Texas driver’s license – a one-hour driving course to educate drivers about the dangers of distracted driving. The Impact Texas Young Drivers course is required for certain drivers starting September 1st.
“Driving is one of the most dangerous things we do every day and it should require our undivided attention,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “This new component of the Distracted Driving Department’s initiative uses research and compelling real-life stories to highlight the many risks that drivers face. This vital program is designed to provide Texas drivers with critical information so they can focus on driving – and ultimately saving lives. “On Texan roads.”
From September 1st, all applicants for the driving aptitude test aged 18 and over must complete the free ITYD course and provide proof of course completion before they can take the driving test. In addition, drivers between the ages of 18 and 24 must complete the six-hour adult driver training course before taking the proficiency test.
ITYD is the second course offered as part of the Impact Texas Driver program, developed by DPS in 2015 to save lives through awareness and education related to distracted driving. The first course started as part of the ITD program was Impact Texas Teen Drivers, which drivers must take between the ages of 16 and 17.
