Will Texas Bluebonnets Bloom in 2021? That seems to be the question everyone is asking today.

If you’ve ever driven up or down a major Texas freeway in the spring, you’ve likely seen beautiful blue flowers covering the grass. Bluebonnets are the state flower of Texas. The bluebonnets not only offer beautiful scenery when traveling, they also force families and couples to hang out in them for photo sessions. Are you looking for bluebonnets this spring? Here is some information about what they are, whether or not they will bloom in 2021, and where to find them near you.

Texas bluebonnets

Pandemic 2020 set Texas ready for 2021 and a fresh start. Since we ventured three months into 2021, it’s no secret that this year wasn’t perfect either. Texas was badly hit by winter storm Uri. The cold and snow decimated much of Texas. The extreme cold is something we are not used to, and neither is the flora and fauna.

The bluebonnet appeared early in January in Houston. Many flower lovers were excited and confused when the flowers appeared. However, their hopes were jeopardized when Texas endured the cold. Temperatures dropped below zero and Texas experienced the worst winter weather in over 100 years. The annual peak of bluebonnet bloom is in the heart of spring: late March and April. This explains why it was so surprising to see bluebonnets in January. Winter storm Uri hit in February and the Texans feared they would not see the beautiful flower bloom this year.

Survive cold weather

However, experts at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center have stepped in to allay our nationwide fears. “Believe it or not, most native perennial and biennial plants like bluebonnets have done well under the isolated snow and ice. If it can rain steadily over the coming weeks, and temperatures stay until the mid-80s or below through April, it should be a great Texan bluebonnet spring. “

Most commonly, bluebonnets bloom in central Texas near I-10, which runs between San Antonio and Houston and then north towards Dallas. The flowers thrive there because bluebonnets tend to enjoy degraded soil. They enjoy bathing in full sun with plenty of room to grow. This means that large fields of bluebonnets are common, especially in heavily grazed areas, locations where fires have occurred, or fields that have been mowed.

Texas bluebonnets are expected to bloom in the spring of 2021!

Temperatures dropped and the wind chill intensified during winter storm Uri. Snow covered the ground, making many wildflower lovers fear that we would not see the bluebonnet this spring. However, experts agree that the snow actually protected the flower like a cozy, warm blanket. So if you are looking for bluebonnets this spring, you have hope! It is very likely that they will bloom in large capacity up and down the Texas freeways as the spring warms up.

Fortunately, the snow covered the flowers like a nice, warm blanket while the air temperatures and wind chill dropped below zero, explains Andrea DeLong-Amaya, horticultural director at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin. Cross your fingers and hope for a profuse bloom of the Texas Bluebonnets in spring 2021!
