AUSTIN, Texas – Governor Greg Abbott announced that the Department of Public Safety (DPS) driver’s license offices in central Texas will open on Friday, May 29th. However, some viewers encountered questions while trying to plan their dates. Here are answers to some of your questions.

Question: The son of a bystander has an ID that expired in October. However, the office is not yet accepting renewal appointments. He needs it as soon as possible so that he can complete his application process. What should he do?

As a reminder, DPS extends the expiration of a Texas ID, driver’s license, commercial driver’s license, or permit from the remainder of the governor’s state of affairs statement. This applies to ID cards that expired on or after March 13, 2020. The waiver applies for 60 days after DPS has notified the public that normal operations will be resumed.

If a person’s ID expired before March 13th, they still have options. Individuals can renew their license or ID online if they meet certain criteria, including:

  • The last renewal of the person was done in person at a driver’s license office
  • Your driver’s license or ID card will expire in less than two years OR it expired less than two years ago
  • The person is at least 18 years old and does not have a temporary license or study license
  • You are a US citizen and your social security number is on file with the DPS

  • Have you had no changes in your eyesight, physical or mental condition since the last renewal
  • Don’t have pending traffic cards or arrest warrants, and license won’t be suspended / revoked

Question: When should the department resume normal operations?

DPS has not disclosed an exact date that normal operations will resume. However, they expect it to happen in mid-summer.

Question: Why does the website say that someone can make an appointment to apply for a Texas driver’s license or ID card, but you can’t select that option when trying to make the appointment?

If the enrolled person already has a valid Texas driver’s license or ID with the status, the “First Texas DL / Apply for Permit” option will not be available. When helping someone else apply for a card, make sure that the first time applicant logs in with their information.

If anyone needs a replacement or renewal, choose the next option and they will be directed to the steps to complete the process online. Please note that no appointments can currently be made for these options.
