The Texas Department of Public Security will gradually begin opening driver license offices starting Tuesday. Limited services are only offered by appointment. As part of the reopening plan, DPS is rolling out a nationwide system for driver license appointment that allows customers to book appointments up to six months in advance.

The four-phase plan for opening driver license offices is as follows:

Phase 1: DPS’s offices in the Northwest and West Texas regions will reopen with limited services starting Tuesday. Customers who do not currently have a Texas driver’s license, commercial driver’s license, study permit, or ID card, as well as those who require a driving test, can make appointments in these two regions. It started at 1 p.m. on Friday.

Phase 2: The DPS offices in the South and Central Texas regions will reopen with limited services starting next Friday. Customers who do not currently have a Texas driver’s license, commercial driver’s license, study permit or ID card, as well as those who require a driving test, can make appointments in these two regions on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m.

Phase 3: DPS offices in the North and Southeast Texas regions will reopen with limited services starting June 3. Customers who do not currently have a Texas driver’s license, commercial driver’s license, study permit, or ID card, as well as those who require a driving test, can begin scheduling appointments in these two regions next Friday at 1:00 p.m.

Phase 4 allows customers to schedule an appointment to transact with a driver’s license office across the state. The start is expected for midsummer. DPS will provide details on this phase at a later date.

If your license has expired since March 13th, you don’t have to worry about renewing in the meantime. When Phase 4 is announced and the DPS offices are fully reopened, you have 60 days to renew your license without paying a penalty. The same pass is valid for approval stickers, vehicle titles and the renewal of parking signs for the disabled.

Many drivers can renew their licenses online. Find out if you are eligible here.
