AUSTIN – Governor Greg Abbott announced today that the Texas Department of Public Security (DPS) will begin phasing out driver’s license offices with limited service offerings on May 26th. As part of this opening plan, DPS will introduce a nationwide driver license (DL) appointment system that customers can use to book appointments up to six months in advance. The limited services are only offered by appointment.
“This phased opening of our driver’s license offices and the introduction of DPS’s online appointment system are prioritizing the health and safety of our communities and ensuring Texans have access to the services they need in their local driver’s license offices,” said Governor Abbott. “I thank DPS for developing this secure and strategic plan to open their offices and for introducing a new scheduling system to streamline our driver license services.”
The four-phase plan for opening driver license offices is as follows:
Phase 1: DPS’s offices in the Northwest and West Texas regions will reopen with limited services from May 26, 2020. Customers who do not currently have a DL, CDL, study permit or ID card for Texas, as well as those who require a driving test, can schedule appointments in these two regions on May 22nd at 1pm
Phase 2: DPS’s offices in the South and Central Texas regions will reopen with limited services from May 29, 2020. Customers who do not currently have a DL, CDL, study permit or ID card for Texas, as well as those who require a driving test, can schedule appointments in these two regions on May 26th at 1:00 p.m.
Phase 3: DPS’s North and Southeast Texas offices will reopen with limited services starting June 3, 2020. Customers who do not currently have a DL, CDL, study permit or ID card for Texas, as well as those who require a driving test, can schedule appointments in these two regions on May 29th at 1:00 p.m.
Phase 4 allows customers to schedule an appointment for all DL office transactions across the state. The start is expected for midsummer. DPS will provide details on this phase at a later date. The extension of the expiration dates remains in effect until the implementation of phase 4.
