Services are limited and residents are encouraged to make an appointment.

HOUSTON – The Texas Department of Public Security will begin reopening driver license offices by region from next week, according to the governor’s office.

The four-phase openings begin Tuesday and service will be limited.

Customers who do not currently have a Texas DL, CDL, study permit or ID card, as well as those who require a driving test, are looked after.

DPS will introduce a nationwide driver’s license appointment system on Friday that will allow customers to book appointments up to six months in advance. It’s accessible here.

The DPS offices in Northwest and West Texas will start accepting appointments starting May 22nd at 1:00 p.m. South and Central Texas offices on May 26 at 1:00 pm; and offices in North and Southeast Texas May 29th at 1pm

In the final stage, for which no details have been released, customers can schedule an appointment for all DL office transactions across the state. It is expected to start in midsummer.

Governor Greg Abbott said Texans had up to 60 days after the offices reopened to renew their driver’s licenses. This waiver only applies to drivers whose license expired on or before March 13, 2020.

“This phased opening of our driver’s license offices and the introduction of DPS’s online appointment system are prioritizing the health and safety of our communities and ensuring Texans have access to the services they need in their local driver’s license offices,” said Abbott.
