The Texas Department of Transportation has a helpful resource on its website about driving on the roads during snow and ice conditions.  That page can be found here:

Here is some of the content from that page:

Driving Tips

  • Slow down. Speed limits are based on normal road and weather conditions, not winter road conditions.
  • Maintain at least three times the normal following distance on snow or ice.
  • Watch carefully for snow removal equipment and stay at least 200 feet behind snow plows.
  • Use extra caution on bridges, ramps, overpasses and shaded areas as they tend to freeze first.
  • If your vehicle starts to slide, ease off the gas pedal or brakes. Steer into the direction of the skid until you have regained traction. Then straighten your vehicle

Texas Adult Drivers Education, an approved driving school which sells the online 6-hour driving course required for those ages 18 to 24 who want a drivers license in Texas, has a YouTube channel with helpful videos on safe driving.  One of those videos offers some helpful driving tips in the winter weather, with several real examples of skidding and other hazards of driving in snow and ice.  Here is that video:
