In some areas along the Texas coast, coastal flooding is already evident as Tropical Storm Beta approaches. The storm is not expected to have the blow of Hurricane Harvey, but it will bring heavy rain and dangerous storm surges.

Lightning flood clocks and severe weather threats apply to southeast Texas and coastal communities. Storm surges of two to five feet are predicted, and southeast Texas could see heavy rain of five to ten inches through Friday. Beta’s maximum sustained winds were previously 50 mph.

“As Tropical Storm Beta approaches the coast, I urge Texans on the storm’s path to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their loved ones from floods, storm surges and other effects of this storm,” said Gov. Greg Abbott.

Abbott issued a disaster declaration for 29 Texas counties ahead of the storm on Monday. The declaration includes Aransas, Biene, Bexar, Brazoria, Calhoun, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Hardin, Harris, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson, Jim Wells, Kenedy, Kleberg, Freedom, Live Oak, Matagorda, Nueces, Orange, Refugio, Counties of Sabine, San Augustine, San Patricio, Shelby, Travis, Victoria, and Wharton.
