Vertafore has acknowledged a data breach that uncovered the driver’s license records of around 28 million Texans thanks to unsecured files.
Vertafore is a serving the insurance industry, helping companies keep up with technology and the changing demands of the market. One of Vertafore’s key features is its ability to help agencies “unleash the power of data to drive growth”.
Unfortunately, for 28 million Texas drivers, Vertafore didn’t do enough to protect the data it had access to. The company announced that three data files were left unsecured on an external storage service and accessed by unauthorized persons.
The information included driver information prior to February 2019, including “Texas driver’s license numbers and names, dates of birth, addresses, and vehicle registration histories.” The data files did not contain any social security numbers or financial information.
Vertafore has since backed up the files, opened an investigation, hired a seasoned consultancy and worked with law enforcement agencies. Despite their efforts to contain the damage, this is only the most recent incident that highlights the challenges of a data-driven society.
